Chris Budd, Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and IMI Director of Knowledge Exchange, will lead a team from the University of Bath, University of Cambridge and University College London on a five year £3.5M EPSRC Programme Grant focusing on the Mathematics of Deep Learning to start in January 2022. Maths4DL will help unlock the next generation of deep learning by building a strong mathematical foundation that combines theory, modelling, data and computation.
Machine learning, in particular Deep Learning (DL) based on neural networks, is one of the fastest growing areas of modern science and technology. However, there is concern about the lack of understanding of how deep learning algorithms make their decisions, undermining trustworthiness in their use. It is this challenge that the Maths4DL team of mathematicians, statisticians and image processing experts will address. The team will work closely with industrial partners, colleagues at Bath’s Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data, the public, and policy makers.
