IMI Small Grant Scheme

Eligibility, who can apply

  • This scheme is open to all University of Bath academics.
  • All IMI Small Grant proposals must include an academic from the department of Mathematical Sciences.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through this online form.

Value of award

We will fund Small Grants of up to £5,000. In very exceptional cases when an extremely strong case is presented, we will consider funding requests of up to £10,000.

Scope of the scheme

IMI Small Grants support activities involving mathematical research that add value to the research excellence of the university. The IMI particularly welcomes applications for, but not limited to, the following purposes:

  • Organising workshops, small conferences, symposia, colloquia.
  • Travel and local expenses for visiting professors/academics, PhD students or special speakers to Bath.
  • Support for collaborative research programmes or activities.
  • Support for activity that is not eligible for funding from other sources or where funding is limited.

Please note, unless there are exceptional circumstances where added value can be clearly made, this scheme is not intended as a mechanism to fund conference attendance.

Additional information

  • Applicants are asked to apply to other sources for partial funding, where appropriate, and to summarise details of such applications. See note 1 below on the several Heilbronn, ICMS and LMS opportunities1.
  • For events or collaborative activities, the IMI encourages a balance of overseas and UK participation, experienced and early-career researchers (e.g. postdocs, postgraduate students), and inclusion of Equality Diversity and Inclusion principles.
  • Applicants may additionally request administrative support for activities, subject to availability.
  • There is a rolling call meaning small grants can be applied for at any time.
  • The application process has been designed to be simple and the assessment panel2 aims to offer a quick response to proposals, usually within a couple of weeks submission.
  • Funds granted must only be used for the purposes set out in the original application and it is expected that any funds unspent at the end of the project, will be returned to IMI.

Your proposal

Click on this link to complete and submit a proposal. Your proposal should include:

  1. A description of the activity, the expected outcomes and the expected added value of the award to both your research objectives and to IMI’s research priorities.
  2. For events, visitors and collaborations, include details of who will be involved, if they have confirmed their commitment, and the role and appropriateness of any team members.
  3. A clear outline of the budget, detailing how much funding is requested from the IMI, and how the money will be used?
  4. Details of other sources of financial support.

Further questions

If you have any questions or queries regarding your proposal, please contact us.

1 The Heilbronn Institute runs four schemes, which resonate with the IMI scheme and which would be a good for synchronised applications. See Heilbronn Small Grants, Heilbronn Focused Research Grants, Heilbronn Sponsorship of Events, Heilbronn Research Visitor Funding. Similarly ICMS runs funding schemes as well as the London Mathematical Society grants scheme which may complement IMI support.

2 The assessment panel is comprised of IMI Directors and Deputy Directors.
