Institute Research Staff Jamboree


On 23rd May the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath will host a collaborative event for mathematics researchers specialising in maths for impact and knowledge exchange. Participants will share knowledge, consider best practice and explore how to grow and promote these unique roles that work at the interface of mathematics and other research disciplines and sectors.

Time:     12:00 – 16:30 (a sandwich lunch will be available on arrival)

Dinner:  17:30 in Comptoir Libanais. The cost will be covered by IMI


12:00   MI/InRA only introductions
12:15    Lunch with all IMI staff & CaMACs
13:00   MIRA only discussions:

  • Learning from the IMI’s mistakes
  • Things I wish I’d known about being a MIRA that I only know now
  • Avoiding bad maths – resisting pressure to use maths to prove hypotheses that might not be correct
  • Authorship with different disciplines
  • Being proactive about getting projects
  • Career development and progression structure
  • Developing a coherent track record
  • Our role in developing impact
  • Future activities for community building

16:30   Wrap up of the day’s discussions
17:00   Walk/take the bus into town
