Project: A best practice framework for Organ-Chip
experiments in drug discovery
Dr Beate Ehrhardt, Research Fellow
#statistics #pharmaceutical #health
Beate worked with industry partners AstraZeneca and Emulate to develop a statistical best-practice framework to improve models that reproduce the effects of drugs at patient level using Organ-Chips (3D micro-physiological systems that aim to recapitulate the complex physiology and microenvironment of an in vivo organ). The use of Organ-Chips within the drug discovery process means that more drugs are likely to reach late stage clinical testing, and fewer animals are needed in the testing process.
Project: Using high dimensional clustering to improve treatment of inflammatory arthritis
Dr Dan Burrows, Research Associate
#inflammation #high-dimensional clustering #data analysis
Dan analysed data collated by the Royal University Hospital, Bath, of 548 patients suffering with Axial Spondyloarthritis (a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes chronic pain), which provided previously obscured insights which can be used to inform clinical decision-making and can support the development of personalised treatment plans with the aim of improving patient outcomes.
Project: CRIISP (Consortium to Research Individual, Interpersonal & Social Influences in Pain)
Dr Laura Oporto, Research Associate; Dr Beate Ehrhardt, Research Fellow
#pain #health #psychology #data analysis
Laura’s and Beate’s project explored how people experience and understand pain, the influence of others on that experience, and the broader social and environmental factors that shape it. This was a multi-institutional platform grant analysing four large datasets from four different team of scientists. Laura worked with Beate to coordinate and advise on all data analytical aspects of the project, as well as provide training where necessary.
