Environmental modelling is essential to both predict weather and climate change, and also to understand the present and future impact of these changes on the energy, transport, agricultural and financial industries. IMI is active in working on a wide variety of problems in environmental science looking at the science behind the prediction of climate change, and the effects of climate change on people and industry, as well as communicating the importance of understanding the impact of climate change to policy makers and the general public
Met Office collaborations
Since its foundation, researchers affiliated to the IMI have collaborated strategically with the UK Met Office on a series of projects to improve the forecasting of the weather and climate, from ground level to space weather, using a combination of numerical weather forecasting methods, data assimilation, and machine learning techniques.
Below are some of the projects that IMI staff and Fellows are involved in.
