Quantum

Theme lead: Dr Pranav Singh

Introduction

Quantum technologies represent a rapidly advancing field poised to drive a myriad of scientific and technological breakthroughs. Recognized as a strategic priority in the UK, this sector has garnered a significant commitment of £2.5 billion under the National Quantum Strategy, aimed at encouraging the development of quantum technologies in the UK over the next decade starting 2024.

These technologies hold transformative potential across various domains such as communication, sensing, imaging, spintronics, solar cells, material science, and drug design. One of the most promising of quantum technologies is quantum computing, which is widely expected to become the defining computational paradigm of the 21st century. While often highlighted for its cryptographic applications, quantum computing holds an even greater potential in tackling computational challenges in drug design, machine learning, computational modelling, logistics, and more, where classical computing hits a bottleneck.

To unlock the full potential of quantum technologies, significant advancements in computational mathematics, algorithm design, and the foundational mathematics of quantum mechanics are required, making the Institute of Mathematical Innovation ideally positioned to spearhead this interdisciplinary initiative.

Theme aims

This theme aims to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and secure research funding in quantum technologies, focusing on key areas including:

  • Quantum Algorithms – theoretical and practical advances in quantum algorithm design.
  • Quantum Hardware – advances in design, control and calibration for quantum computers and networks.
  • Computational Chemistry & Physics – interdisciplinary applications to NMR, DFT, drug design, photonics, condensed matter physics, photovoltaic cells, among others.
  • Foundations of Quantum Mechanics – operatorial, analytic and algebraic aspects of quantum mechanics.

To achieve these aims, we will collaborate with various departments at the University of Bath, other UK and international universities, and industry partners.
